Philosophy
For me lutherie is the culmination of science and art - a guitar is the unique result of a makers creative sound and vision.
Each element of the instrument should work together to provide an inherent whole – an inevitable design that looks, sounds and feels “right”. My aim is to build instruments that are a joy to play, listen to and admire.
Choice of guitar woods
I use a range of woods for my guitars including Brazilian rosewood, cypress or maple for the back and sides and figured woods such as satinwood and Tazmanian blackwood for decoration. I feel that it is important to match the wood to the style of guitar being made and the type of sound required. Soundboards are usually made of European spruce and each piece is carefully chosen with consideration to the tightness of the grain, tap-tone, weight and flexibility. Back and side wood is also chosen according to visual qualities and it’s tap-tone resonance.
Guitar sound
The sound of the instrument is tailored through wood selection, strutting pattern, soundboard thickness and strut shaping to reach the desired tone. I believe a classical guitar should have a rich, deep bass with a clear treble sound and there should be balance and evenness across all the strings. The overtones provide colour to the tone without masking the core sound of the note. I build in the Spanish-style and I use strutting patterns evolved from the fan-braced system. I feel that this helps to provide the guitars with the correct sound and feel.
