Biography
I began studying guitar making with the Lincoln-based luthier Adrian Lucas. He provided me with a good foundation in the necessary wood-working skills and developed my awareness of the unique challenges of guitar making. This experience also served to fuel my desire to become a professional guitar maker. At this time I also joined the Guild of American Luthiers, which I continue to be a member of.
After spending two years studying guitar making part-time I enrolled in the classical guitar building course at the world-renowned centre of musical instrument making and repair at Newark. There I was taught by Tony Johnson and Roy Courtnall who are esteemed professional builders with a wealth of lutherie experience. Full-time study over a period of two years enabled me to develop as a maker. I was able to hone my skills in making instruments and acquire an ear and feel for the peculiarities of each piece of wood. As a result of my study at Newark college I gained ASET level 2 and ASET level 3 in instrument building as well as the Newark certificate in guitar making.
